The hard and stable one-piece spindle, also helps prolong life of the micrometer. | Tough Blades - The blades are .030" (0.8mm) thick, allowing them to measure to a depth of 5/16" (8mm). Making it possible to get specific readings, even on the smallest of objects. | Easy to Read - The balanced frame and thimble design ensures easy handling and better readability. It's advanced sleeve design comprises of staggered lines and distinct figures, making it easier to take precise and accurate measurements. | Quick Adjusting Tool - The Speeder is the perfect tool for adjusting blades quickly, on all sizes of micrometers. With its non-rotating spindle, it prevents the blades from turning in narrow slots or rolling off shoulder. | The Standard for Excellence - Proudly made in the USA, Starrett combines over 140 years of American heritage and innovation with globally sourced materials to deliver exceptional quality tools and products.
The Starrett 486 series blade-type outside micrometer has a vernier scale in inch units for taking precise outside diameter (OD) measurements, and a blade anvil and spindle for measurement of groove diameter of shafts and keyways. The spindle does not rotate during adjustment, to help provide steady positioning for measurement. A speeder helps provide quick adjustment capability. The frame is made of high-grade tool steel and has a black enamel finish for protection and durability. The vernier scale on the thimble and sleeve is graduated to 0.001”, and has a satin chrome rust- and glare-resistant finish. The spindle and anvils are made of hardened steel for durability. Micrometers are precision measuring instruments that use a calibrated screw to measure small distances. These measurements are translated into large rotations of the screw that are then able to be read from a scale or a dial. Micrometers are typically used in manufacturing, machining, and mechanical engineering. There are three types of micrometer: outside, inside, and depth. Outside micrometers may also be called micrometer calipers, and are used to measure the length, width, or outside diameter of an object. Inside micrometers are typically used to measure interior diameter, as in a hole. Depth micrometers measure the height, or depth, of any shape that has a step, groove, or slot. The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company was founded in 1880 and is headquartered in Athol, MA.
