The Starrett 1150Z-2 Inch Reading Dial Indicator 81-111-1150 Snap Gauge is used for measuring the outer diameter (OD) of workpieces 0-2” in diameter, has precise dial graduations of 0.0001”, dial readings of + or - 10, and a total measurement range of 0.040”. The 5/16” hardened steel contacts and backstop are precision ground, lapped flat, and keyed to maintain orientation of faces. The backstop can be adjusted to center the workpiece, and the top contact can be reversed to present a spherical surface to the workpiece. The indicator face rotates 360 degrees and locks in place for reading from any direction, and has a double row of graduations for reading in opposite directions, with minus graduations printed in red and plus graduations printed in black for readability. A fine adjustment screw provides hand zeroing.Dial indicators may also be called dial gauges, dial calipers, and probe indicators. These precision measuring tools are used to accurately measure small linear distances and object sizes. The dial magnifies the measurement so that it can more easily be read by the human eye. Frequently used in manufacturing, laboratories, and other industrial or mechanical fields, dial indicators are used anywhere a small measurement must be found and recorded or transferred, such as checking the variation in tolerance of a workpiece. Dial test indicators are very similar to dial indicators, except that the axis of measurement is perpendicular to the axis of the indicator. Standard dial indicators measure the displacement along the axis of the indicator. Dial indicators can be analog, with a mechanical dial, or electronic, with a digital display. Some electronic models transfer the data electronically to a computer for recording and potential manipulation. The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company was founded in 1880 and is headquartered in Athol, MA.
